Plot Summary |
Udham Singh avenged the Jallianwala
Bagh massacre by shooting Michael
O’Dwyer in London, in March, 1940.
This is the story of ‘Sardar Udham’, the
journey behind this fact. Born on 26th
December to a poor family in Sunam,
Punjab, Udham Singh lost his parents at
an early age, and his only sibling, an
elder brother, soon after. Raised in an
orphanage, Udham Singh showed an
early inclination towards the freedom
movement. Resentment against the
British had been building up in Punjab
culminating in protests against the
highly repressive Rowlatt Act. In early
April, 1919, the protests escalated into
violent riots between civilians and British
troops in Amritsar. The Lieutenant
Governor of Punjab, Michael O’Dwyer
decided to ‘restore order’ by handing
over the command of the city to
Brigadier General Dyer. On the fateful
day of April 13th, 1919, over twenty
thousand unarmed people assembled in
Jallianwala Bagh to celebrate the
festival of Baisakhi, and to peacefully
protest the Act. General Dyer reached
the bagh with armed troops and ordered
them to open fire.Approximately 1650
rounds were fired in 10 minutes, some
bullets ricocheting and piercing through
multiple bodies. It was a blood bath as
people made desperate efforts to get
away from the hail of bullets, and those
who survived trampled each other to
death. Thousands of the Injured crawled
into the streets only to lie un-attended
the entire night, dying in pools of their
own blood for no relative dared to step
out into the curfew. That day, the entire
nation was in shock over the merciless
tragedy. Only 20-years-old at the time,
Udham Singh, was deeply scarred by
this massacre and soon got involved in
the armed resistance growing outside
India. In 1927, he returned to India
hoping to galvanise the anti-colonial
movement. As a member of the
revolutionary group, ‘Ghadr party’, he
befriended Bhagat Singh, eventually
respecting him as a guru. Udham was
eventually arrested in Amritsar (and
sentenced for 5 years) |
