Plot Summary |
Famous truth-seeking detective Byomkesh Bakshi along with his writer friend Ajit decides to investigate the death of professor Ishan Majumder at Lakhansarai, who was residing as a guest at Ramkishore Singha’s ancestral fort to research about its history and the rumour of its hidden treasure. According to police evidence, Ishan died due to a snakebite on his leg. But with the help of DSP Pandey, Bakshi comes to know about the chain of unusual deaths in the Singha family. Ramkishore’s daughter Haripriya, who was married to Manilal, was supposedly killed due to a snakebite, while his son Bangshidhar’s wife Surama fell off a cliff. Byomkesh is also informed that Ramkishore’s brother, who was an heir as well to the property, had expired long back due to plague. Despite a widespread terror of snakebites in that area, Byomkesh becomes apprehensive of the presence of the snake due to ample usage of carbolic acid around the place.
As he tries matching the various dynamics between the family members eyeing the fort, Byomkesh is convinced that he has seen Ramkishore Babu before. In the course of events, Ramkishore decides to marry Tulsi off with his favourite son-in-law Manilal and kicks out Ramapati for stealing a pen belonging to Manilal. Within a few days, the saint is found dead with a visible snakebite on his leg. Finally, Byomkesh deciphers that the saint was none other than Ramkishore’s supposedly dead brother Ramvinod. The real culprit turns out to be Manilal, who, despite getting ownership of Ramkishore’s property, aimed to grasp onto more. Manilal had used his poison-tipped fountain pen to kill Ishanchandra, Ramvinod, and even his own wife Haripriya and made them all look like snakebites. When Manilal is encountered, he tries to kill Tulsi with the fountain pen but Byomkesh intervenes and gets him arrested. Byomkesh closes the case and reveals about the secret chamber and the molten gold that lies inside Mohanlal, the ancient cannon outside the fort |
